Advocacy Committee

This committee shall study, develop and recommend policies to the board relating to the advocacy mission of the organization. All policies shall be in support of the organization’s strategic plan and annual operational plan and in line, as the board sees fit, with advocacy efforts as requested by USGBC National. A broad definition of advocacy will be pursued that includes political advocacy as well as community outreach.

Advocacy Committee Task Force Volunteer Opportunities:

Green Schools Caucus

Responsibilities:

  • Identify key Kentucky legislators to target as participants in the Green School Caucus
  • Collaborate with Communications Task Force to develop Green Schools presentation and deliver to Kentucky legislators
  • Collaborate with Communications Task Force to produce press announcements/press events as needed
  • Address Green Schools issues/questions within the Kentucky General Assembly and other state agencies as requested in collaboration with Advocacy Response Task Force
  • Document Annual Workplan and Volunteer Job Descriptions

 

Mayors’ Alliance

Responsibilities:

  • Identify key mayors in Kentucky to contact and schedule appointments with mayors and/or staff to secure involvement
  • Collaborate with Communications Task Force to develop Green Schools presentation and deliver to Kentucky mayors
  • Collaborate with Communications Task Force to produce press announcements/press events as needed
  • Document Annual Workplan and Volunteer Job Descriptions

Green Schools Education and Outreach

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and document appropriate education associations and organizations with contact information for speaking engagements, organized meet and greets, school tours and exhibit opportunities
  • Develop education and outreach calendar of speaking/exhibit commitments and school tours and provide to Communications Task Force for marketing/publicity purposes
  • Secure speakers and coordinate with Membership Committee for volunteers as needed
  • Develop budget for events/exhibits

Advocacy Response Team

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with USGBC National Advocacy Staff and Southeast Regional Advocacy Representative
  • Serve as Advocacy Committee “legislative experts” and provide recommendations for committee action as needed
  • Support Green Schools Caucus, Mayor’s Alliance, Kentucky Chapter Board of Directors and High Performance Building Advisory Committee as needed
  • Document Annual Workplan and Volunteer Job Descriptions

Advocacy Communications

Responsibilities:

  • Write and distribute press releases as needed
  • Coordinate press events
  • Position articles in relevant publications to support advocacy initiatives
  • Review USGBC national advocacy presentations (Green Schools and others) and tailor to Kentucky Chapter needs
  • Serve as liaison with Chapter Communications Committee to provide relevant information for state-wide distribution
