Why Support Kentucky USGBC?

The Kentucky Chapter is hard at work advancing the vision for a sustainable built environment here at home.  We applaud the national recognition our state has received for both its High Performance Building standards for public facilities and net zero energy K-12 schools in Warren and Kenton counties.  The number of LEED registered projects in Kentucky has exploded and currently stands at over 140.  Kentucky Chapter membership increased 65% in 2009, and our board of directors grew from seven to 20.  A Green Schools Caucus and Mayors’ Alliance was established to educate our leaders about the benefits of green schools, and through our lunch and learns, LEED workshops, seminars and speaking engagements, the Kentucky Chapter has educated 1000’s throughout the state about the benefits of green building.

And, we’d appreciate your help.  Your training dollars, Chapter membership and corporate sponsorship provide much needed financial and human resources to firmly establish Kentucky as a leader in this movement and continue with our current Top 10!

WHAT'S NEW top 10!

1. We have staff.  Through winning a National Challenge Grant, we were able to hire an Executive Director full time and subsequently added an Education Programs Director.

2. We've expanded our education programs.   As an Education Provider, we will offer Credential Maintenance courses around Kentucky.  We’ve added Green Advantage Certification training for construction personnel in addition to our LEED workshops and continue to provide education to support Kentucky’s new High Performance Buildings standards.  The education committee is spearheading new course development specifically designed for our needs here in Kentucky and work hard bringing you monthly lunch and learns.

3. We've grown.  We’ve increase membership 65% and have numerous requests from around Kentucky to organize Chapter activities in these communities.  Our communications committee launched the Chapter website and produce the Communiqué, a monthly newsletter keep members up to date on Chapter events and important news from USGBC National.

4. We're educating future builders.  Through our membership committee, recent graduates are working with students and faculty in their alma maters to grow awareness of Kentucky USGBC and LEED.

5.  Green Scenes remain free and open to all.  Because of the generosity of our corporate sponsors, the Chapter continues to provide free, interesting monthly Green Scenes at some of the coolest sustainable sites in Kentucky.  And, we invite all those passionate about sustainability, Chapter member or not.

6.  We’re helping you make the case for LEED.  Our board of directors recently established a volunteer-based task force to study the costs associated with Kentucky LEED projects.  We understand Kentucky-specific cost data is needed to support the advancement of LEED projects in the Commonwealth.

7.  We provide the forum for learning and networking.  No other non-profit organization in Kentucky brings together a multitude of stakeholders focused on advancing a sustainable built environment here at home.  USGBC brings together  14 member categories including building product manufacturers, contractors and builders, corporate and retail, educational and research institutions, environmental and non-profit organizations, federal government, finance and insurance community, professional firms (architects, engineers, consultants, legal, design and technical), professional societies and trade associations, real estate and real estate  providers, state and local governments and utilities.

8.  We've got a statewide Advocacy Committee.  In an effort to affect building codes and legislation, our advocacy committee is hard at work on your behalf to bring about positive change and remove outdated barriers to good sustainable design.

9.  We're changing schools in Kentucky.  Working with our state legislators, our advocacy committee established a Green Schools Caucus for both the house and senate and has signed up mayors from around Kentucky in support of Green Schools for their communities.  Our Chapter will be educating top leaders about the healthy impacts green schools have, including better indoor air quality, which helps reduce asthma, increase attendance and performance of both students and teachers.

10.  We've got strong corporate partners.  Our support from the corporate community is outstanding.  Through the generous support of our board members’ organizations that embrace countless hours of volunteer time to lead this Chapter as well as our first-ever Chapter partners including Turner Construction, Stites & Harbison, Haworth Furniture, Pella Windows & Doors and Luckett & Farley, as well as over 50 Green Scene and Lunch and Learn sponsors, the Chapter has worked to keep pace with tremendous growth and requests for help.

Please consider a chapter membership.  For just $45.50 per year (if you are an employee of a National Member Company), $65.00 per year (as an individual member) or $25 per year (as a full time student) -- you can continue to educate and advocate for sustainable building, growth and communities around Kentucky.
